Crafting YA Fantasy Stories That Resonate
To me, writing YA Fantasy is both craft and calling. I don’t outline—I write forward until I’m boxed in, then puzzle my way out. It’s not a method I chose; it’s how I’m wired. I can’t leave a puzzle unsolved. And often, the best ideas come not when I’m staring at the screen, but when I’m walking the dog, taking a shower, or lying in bed trying not to think about the damn story.
It’s my greatest hope that someday, I’ll be someone’s favorite author.
Lumora: A New Beginning is a YA dark fantasy and psychological horror about four teens bound by grief who are pulled into Lumora—a land of beauty and abundance. But perfection never stays buried for long.
Aaron Reno
After the death of Jess’s father, three grieving teens—Jess, Alex, and Devon—form a fragile connection in the small town of Mapleview, Vermont. Each carries private wounds: Jess is trapped under the thumb of her narcissistic mother; Alex is haunted by a family legacy tied to madness; and Devon, having watched his mother waste away, is desperate for control. When a dark force infects Devon and strange tendrils begin to surface, Carlos—an outsider reeling from the brutal death of his only friend—is pulled into their orbit, unaware of the darkness that’s already taken root among them. Together, the four teens are dragged through a rift inside the abandoned Miller house into Lumora—a world of lush forests, eternal bloom, and eerie stillness, where nothing rots, nothing fades, and nothing ever dies.
As they journey deeper into Lumora, the cracks beneath its perfect surface begin to show. Devon succumbs to the growing infection, passing it to Carlos, whose unraveling echoes the decay the land has long forgotten how to bear. Jess begins to sense an ancient force stirring in the roots, while Alex—drawn to elemental fire and the legacy of the Millers—falls under the sway of Eleanor, the Council Sage of Alderbrook, who believes the light must conquer the shadow through whatever means necessary. When Jess discovers she’s pregnant in a world where no new life has been born in generations, the Council nearly has her executed. But in the final battle, it isn’t power that wins—it’s surrender. Jess calls upon the land itself, summoning a restorative force that drains both shadow and flame. Carlos and Devon are lost. Jess and Alex remain behind, wounded but alive, choosing to stay and raise the first child born in Lumora since the Great Containment—to nurture not just their budding family, but a new beginning.
